Yesterday, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced, at the National Press Club,  a new measure to develop jet fuel from crop residues.  He suggests that, “By producing more Biofuels in America, we will create jobs, combat global warming, replace our dependence on foreign oil, and build a stronger foundation for the 21st century economy.  “

The plan consists of a five-year agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration to develop jet fuel made from forest and crop residues and other “green” feedstock.  Boeing vice president Bill Glover accepted the plan with open arms saying that “through test flights with a number of our customers, we have proven that fuels made from plant matter and algae can power aircraft safely and efficiently,”

The USDA Biomass Crop Assistant Program will be fronting 75% of the bill.  Their task is to establish dedicated crops, as well as the means of transporting crops to facilities for fuel conversion.

The agreement will help the US meet the demands of  George Bush’s 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act which requires the US to increase the amount of Biofuel blended into transportation fuel from 9 billion to 36 billion gallons by 2022.

Are you listening, Stephen Harper?

Acts like this, which support sustainable energy use while still being realistic about the state of renewable applicability, are exactly what needs to be done to successfully push the world in the direction of curbing climate change.  It realizes the transition from dirty to clean energy sources cannot be done overnight. The world needs more of this sort of pragmatic approach.  We’ll see over the next five years whether or not this is just early election time smoke and mirrors.
